Using Spoolfield with AI apps

Spoolfield supports MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard that lets AI apps use other apps on your device as tools. Ask in your own words. Spoolfield does the work on your device, and files never pass through our servers.

What an AI app can ask Spoolfield to do

  • Save a clip, or a whole YouTube playlist, in any of the seven formats.
  • Convert a file that’s already on your device.
  • Check a link first: its title, channel, length and the resolutions it has.
  • Search YouTube for clips when you describe what you want, and keep to Creative Commons videos if you ask. Searching doesn’t use an AI file.
  • Check your plan and how many free AI files you have left this month.

For example: “Save this clip as an MP3 at 320 kbps”, “Convert Sunset Drive.mkv to MOV so I can edit it”, or “Find Creative Commons drone footage of a coastline and save the best one as MP4”. The AI app tells you where each file was saved.

Connect an AI app on your device

  1. Install Spoolfield and open it. AI apps work in the free trial too.
  2. Open Settings › AI apps. Under Add Spoolfield to your AI apps, click Add next to your AI app. Spoolfield finds Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Gemini CLI, LM Studio and Cline.
  3. Quit the AI app completely and open it again.

Spoolfield only changes its own entry in the AI app’s settings, and keeps a copy of the old settings file next to it, ending in .spoolfield-backup.

AI app not on the list? Click Copy setup for AI apps and paste it into that app’s MCP settings:

Claude Desktop
Settings › Developer › Edit Config
Cursor
~/.cursor/mcp.json
VS Code (GitHub Copilot)
.vscode/mcp.json, inside "servers"
Gemini CLI
~/.gemini/settings.json
LM Studio
Program › Install › Edit mcp.json
Windsurf
~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json
Cline
cline_mcp_settings.json
Claude Code
claude mcp add spoolfield -- "…\Spoolfield.exe" --mcp

Use it from claude.ai

With Spoolfield Pro, claude.ai in your browser can use Spoolfield too, with nothing to copy.

  1. In Spoolfield, open Settings › AI apps and turn on Allow AI apps on the web.
  2. Click Connect to Claude on our home page and add Spoolfield in claude.ai.
  3. Sign in with the email you used to buy Spoolfield, enter the code we email you, then click Allow.

Keep Spoolfield open while you chat. Requests go to Spoolfield on your device, which saves the files there. Only one device receives requests at a time: turning it on somewhere else turns it off here.

Free AI files and AI credits

  • During the free trial, AI apps share your 3 trial clips.
  • AI apps need Spoolfield Pro. The Lite plan works in the Spoolfield window only.
  • With Pro, you get 30 free AI files every month, shared by all your devices. The count starts again on the 1st of each month (UTC).
  • After that, each file uses one AI credit. Your free files and credits show in Settings › AI apps.
  • Failed or cancelled files don’t use anything. Downloads you start in the Spoolfield window stay unlimited.

Good to know

  • Files from AI apps go to your usual Spoolfield folder. They don’t appear in the queue of the Spoolfield window.
  • If a site needs you signed in, the AI app will say so. Turn on Browser cookies as described in Troubleshooting.
  • Only download videos you own, videos licensed for reuse, or videos you have permission to use. Spoolfield doesn’t remove DRM.
