Resize video to 9:16 for Shorts, Reels and TikTok

Have a wide 16:9 recording that should fill a phone screen? Choose Convert in Spoolfield, set the Shape to 9:16 and decide how the picture fills the tall frame. You can trim it and shrink the file in the same job, right from your browser.

Change a video to 9:16 in 3 steps

  1. Add the video under Your video, by link or upload, and choose Convert under Tool. Leave Format on MP4, or pick MOV, MKV or WebM.
  2. Set Shape to 9:16, then pick a Fill: Crop to fill to use the whole tall frame, or Fit + blur to keep every edge of the picture.
  3. Check the price at the bottom and press Run. The new file appears under Your jobs, where you press Save to download it.

More than a crop

  • Four shapes, or Keep

9:16 for Shorts, Reels and TikTok, 4:5 for feed posts, 1:1 for a square, and 16:9 to turn a vertical clip back into a wide one. Keep leaves the frame as it is.

  • Two ways to fill the frame

Crop to fill enlarges the picture and trims the edges that don’t fit, keeping the center. Fit + blur shrinks the whole picture to fit and lays it over a blurred copy of itself, so nothing is cut.

  • Trim in the same pass

Fill in From (optional) and To (optional), such as 1:30 and 2:45, and only that part is saved in the new shape.

  • Small enough to send

Shrink to fit brings the file under 10, 16, 25, 50 or 100 MB, lowering the quality only as much as it needs to. A very long video may not fit the smallest sizes.

Questions

Will cropping to 9:16 cut off the person on screen?

Crop to fill keeps the middle of the picture, so it works well when the person is centered. If they move around or sit to one side, choose Fit + blur: the whole frame stays visible on a blurred background.

What resolution will the resized video have?

Up to 720p on the Free plan, 1080p on Starter and 4K on Creator. Those plans also keep your files ready to download for 1, 3 or 7 days.

How much does it cost to resize a video?

1 credit per 5 minutes of video, and at least 1 credit per job, so a 12-minute video uses 3. You see the price before you press Run, and a job that fails gives the credits back.

Can I add captions while changing the shape?

Yes, with the Captions tool instead of Convert. It has the same Shape and Fill choices and burns in word-by-word captions in the same job. To cut several vertical clips from one long video, use Make a Short.
