Submagic alternative for long videos, compared

Submagic is about making a short video look finished: animated captions with emojis, zooms, sound effects, B-roll and silence removal, edited by changing the text. Spoolfield starts one step earlier, with the long recording. It finds the parts about your topic in a podcast or webinar of up to 3 hours, cuts them into vertical clips with captions that light up word by word, and stops there. Many people would use the two together.

Submagic details are taken from submagic.co as it read on 29 October 2026. Spoolfield and Submagic are separate companies. Work only with videos you own, are licensed to reuse, or have permission to use.

What Submagic does that Spoolfield doesn’t

  • Caption animations with emojis, zooms and sound effects that make a clip feel edited.
  • Cutting out silences and filler words automatically.
  • Adding stock B-roll, and editing a video by editing its words.
  • Translating subtitles into other languages.
  • Scheduling posts, and a brand kit shared by a team.

What Spoolfield does differently

  • Starts from the full recording

Bring an episode, a class or a stream of up to 3 hours by link or upload, and get only the parts about your topic.

  • A free plan that stays free

Ten credits arrive every month on the free plan, so you can keep using it for small jobs without a card.

  • The words as files

Download what was said as TXT, SRT subtitles or JSON with the time of every word, ready for an editor like Submagic.

  • From a chat or your code

Connect Claude or Cursor with one web address, or call the REST API, on any plan.

Questions

Does Spoolfield have animated captions?

Yes, in the sense that each word lights up as it’s spoken. There are four styles and three positions. There are no emojis, zooms or sound effects.

Can Spoolfield take out pauses and filler words?

No. Spoolfield ends each clip on a whole sentence, but it doesn’t cut silences or “um”s inside a clip.

Can I use Spoolfield and Submagic together?

Yes. Use Spoolfield to pull the strongest parts out of a long recording, then open those short clips in Submagic for its effects. Both accept uploads.
